About the Society
The objective of Buckinghamshire Art Society is the encouragement and promotion of painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and 3D work, along with the encouragement of other art-related activities in the county.
Comprising around 100 mostly professional and semi-professional artists, members represent a wide variety of styles and media. Membership to the Society is granted on the basis of artistic skill.
The society plays an active role in the visual arts in Buckinghamshire, organising exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops and various social events, the majority of which are open to the public. The society maintains close links with the County Museum in Aylesbury.
The society was founded in 1920 by a group of Buckinghamshire painters and sculptors, originally providing a forum for them organise exhibitions and sell art without a hefty London showroom commission.
While the first exhibitions took place in the old Market Hall in Amersham, later exhibitions were moved to the roomier Fitzwilliams Centre in Beaconsfield from 1971 onwards, and this location remains the home of our annual spring exhibition.
Since its foundation, Bucks Arts Society has organised at least two exhibitions per year, traditionally one in the autumn for members only, and one in the spring, to which non-members can also submit their work.
In order to encourage younger artists, the society set up The Young Artist Award in 2001, a competition aimed at 16 – 18 year old art students in the county. Bucks Arts Society invites all schools and colleges in Buckinghamshire to submit work for the competition, which is run in conjunction with the Autumn Exhibition.
